Native or cross-platform: how to choose for your next mobile app
The right choice depends less on technology trends and more on your features, budget, team and how long the app needs to live. Here is how we help clients decide.
Start with what the app must do
List the features that touch the device: camera, Bluetooth, background location, payments, health data, widgets or wearables. The deeper and more unusual the hardware integration, the stronger the case for native development. Most business apps — accounts, forms, content, booking, chat and payments — work very well with cross-platform frameworks.
What cross-platform gives you
- One codebase for iOS and Android, which usually reduces build and maintenance effort.
- A single team and a consistent experience across platforms.
- Faster iteration for MVPs and products that change often.
- Mature options: Flutter for consistent custom UI, React Native for teams with JavaScript and React skills.
What native gives you
- Full access to new platform features as soon as Apple and Google release them.
- The best performance for graphics, real-time processing and complex animations.
- Deep integration with hardware, sensors and system services.
- Platform-specific behaviour that feels exactly right to each user group.
Questions to answer before deciding
- Do you need both platforms at launch, or can one come first?
- Which device features are essential, and are reliable libraries available for them?
- What skills does your current or future team have?
- How long will the app be maintained, and who will maintain it?
- Are there performance-critical screens, such as maps with live data or video processing?
A pragmatic middle ground
Many successful apps combine approaches: a cross-platform app with a few native modules for demanding features. This keeps most of the efficiency benefit while solving the hard parts properly. In our own portfolio we have shipped React Native apps for mobility, healthcare administration and children’s learning, and Flutter apps for scientific image processing, note-taking, care services and AI character chat.
Our recommendation
Choose cross-platform by default for business and consumer apps with standard features, and move to native when a specific requirement justifies the extra effort. Decide after reviewing the feature list, not before. A short discovery session usually settles the question and gives you an estimate for both options.
